I should have responded long ago.

I truly appreciate your perspective on the matter of Christian fantasy. Though I would like to write non-fantasy fiction, which I'll probably give a shot sometime, fantasy is a delight having such an attractive force. But that attraction can be a bad thing.

One can get really dark with it in which case the story betrays some degree of inordinate affection for the occultic, in which the figures have at least a suspicious link with the satanic. What Christian wants to plunge himself into such an imaginary world? What Christian writer could persuade himself to write in such a way?

Paradoxically, this doesn't preclude witches, wizards, or any assortment of characters to have a connection with the archenemy of God; but to be wholesome and truly Christian, it reveals the evilness of such a connection and hence the evilness of the characters themselves.

Let me say that I don't think the presence of witches and wizards must always assume a connection with the satanic. Contrary to what many Christians believe, I think the Harry Potter series falls into this category, and obviously so. I wish sometimes, though, J. K. Rowling had created a fantasy world whose characters were just as non-muggle as she made them, but weren't identified as witches and wizards. If that had been so, I don't think there would have been the outcry from as many Christians as there has been.

Nor do I think Christian fantasy (or any type of fantasy) must be saturated with witches, wizards, sorcerers, dragons, and such other-worldly figures. Some Christian fantasy is so over-bearing in that regard that it becomes very distracting.

Finally, as I had mentioned in the article, there is a dearth of good Christian fantasy today. Such works that have been promoted as tantamount to The Chronicles of Narnia, or Lord of the Rings, et. al., are quite presumptuous. Not merely presumptuous, but in some cases, downright mediocre both in the story and the quality of the writing. Narnia and the Rings are in a class by themselves and we would do well not to try and invade it. I think it is a mistake to try and imitate the great ones whether in story, style, or stamina. Even if it manages to get close, it will slip and fall flat.

Hope you enjoy the book. Let me know what you think.

Thomas Clayton BooherT C Booherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05076755815599489170noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4037568074224135598.post-70541574301874421872009-12-21T06:17:30.286-08:002009-12-21T06:17:30.286-08:00Thomas,
Thank you for your thoughts, I believe I ...Thomas,

Thank you for your thoughts, I believe I have read and enjoyed each story that you mention in your post. I am looking forward to picking up a copy of your book and giving it a read. I am a huge fan of the fantasy genre, as well as a Christian believer and I have often wondered where the Lewis' and Tolkeins' of our time are, as there does seem to be a dearth of good Christian fantasy available today. Furthermore, it is just difficult to find "decent" stories that are captivating to a child's imagination that are not rife with post-modern, naturalistic thinking, let alone those that would have be from a Christian worldview. So, thank you for your efforts.Jasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14106090101965079686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4037568074224135598.post-39375380588019690742009-01-07T21:43:00.000-08:002009-01-07T21:43:00.000-08:00buka dongggggg : Agungbudirustanto.blogspot.comin ...buka dongggggg : Agungbudirustanto.blogspot.com
in BALLI - BOROBUDUR - INDONESIAAgung Familyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14038526758567646803noreply@blogger.com
