There are a lot of things that can be stuffed into a church bulletin - calendars, prayer lists, sermon notes, announcements, etc. One of the inserts that we have begun to include at Countryside Presbyterian Church (Cameron, NC) is a lesson series on the Doctrines of Grace, well-known by the acronym TULIP (Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, Perseverance of the Saints).
These are the doctrines that came out of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century. They were true then, and they are true today. Their formulation was a response to the theology of Jacobus Arminius (1560-1609), although it was more precisely a reply to his followers. After Arminius's death, they organized and articulated their understanding of his theology in a publication known as The Five Articles of Remonstrance (1610). The Synod of Dort (1618-1619) examined these articles and denounced them as contrary to the Holy Scriptures.
The Doctrines of Grace are the heart of the gospel. As such, they have a practical value in that they shape not only the what of our Christian faith, but just as importantly the behavior which that faith produces. In fact, it informs us that there is such an effect, something that many professing Christians seem to be unaware of because their lives do not reflect it.
I invite you to follow the series and hope that, if you are a true believer in Jesus Christ, it will clarify and improve your faith. If not a believer, perhaps God's Spirit may use it to bring you to faith.
